  • Mechiras Chometz – Selling of Chometz

    It is prohibited to possess chometz (leaven or any product containing leaven) during Passover. One is not allowed to derive any benefit from such chometz, even after Passover. Therefore, if one has in his possession any chometz which he is unable to consume or properly dispose of, he is required to sell it before Passover.

    Traditionally, a rabbi or qualified individual acts as an agent for the entire community, selling all of its leftover chometz, using legal documents to transfer the ownership.

    All such leftover chometz should be placed in a spare room, closet or box, which is then locked or sealed, no later than early morning the day of Passover Eve (and not reopened until two hours after the holiday’s conclusion).

Also, to sell chometz that tends to harden and to adhere to inside surfaces of pans, pots or cooking and eating utensils, of whatever nature and all kinds of live animals that have been eating Chometz or mixtures.
